About

Who is it for?

European researchers who want to do research in JAPAN and Japanese researchers who want to do research in EUROPE.

• Applicants with European nationality (including the Balkans, Baltic states, Israel, Switzerland, Turkey and UK) are expected to carry out their research in Japan
• Japanese applicants are expected to carry out their research in Europe

Research fields

All research fields are supported.

Duration

• Minimum: 3 months
• Maximum: 12 months

Funding

Up to €30,000 per year (pro-rated for shorter periods)

Eligibility

• You must have completed at least a Master’s degree within the 10 years preceding your application and hold the degree at the time of submission. Extensions may be considered for justified reasons (e.g., maternity/paternity leave, medical exemptions, military service).
• You are free to choose your host institution in Japan or Europe but you must arrange the host institute yourself. We do not have partnerships or affiliations with Japanese or European universities and are therefore unable to help applicants in finding a host institution, professor or placement.
• You do not need to be enrolled or employed at the time of applying.
• Japanese researchers currently residing and/or working in Europe are eligible to apply.
• Preference is given to applicants who plan to travel to Japan/Europe rather than those seeking to extend current stays.

Application

1. Research plan (max 2 pages, A4) including an estimate of total costs
2. Curriculum Vitae
3. Highest academic degree obtained to date
4. 1 passport-size photograph
5. Publications/professional achievements list (chronological), including all authors, place and year of publication and page references
6. Two reference letters (from people able to comment on your academic/professional qualifications and previous work)
7. Host institution confirmation letter stating that research/work facilities will be available and explaining how the host/supervisor will support the project (resources, supervision, etc.). This helps the Selection Committee assess the feasibility of the research.
