Computation is perhaps one of the most influential terms of the last century. However, I believe we must reformulate this concept in terms of its substrate, that is, what performs the computations. Today I am going to review a paper in that direction, which opens up avenues toward understanding chemical computation.
How and why did human language evolve? What are the social, cognitive and environmental pressures that drive the emergence of language and shape its structure? As a postdoctoral researcher, you will explore the ecological conditions under which compositionality and dishonest signalling emerge in novel communication systems, using state-of-the-art Virtual Reality experiments.
How and why did human language evolve? What are the social, cognitive, and environmental pressures that drive the emergence of language and shape its structure? As a PhD candidate, you will explore the ecological conditions under which compositionality and dishonest signalling emerge in novel communication systems, using state-of-the-art swarm robotics models.

The Polish Symposium on Physics in Economics and Social Sciences (FENS 2025) is a well-established event that has been bringing together physicists, economists, and social scientists interested in applying statistical physics methods to challenges encountered in their respective fields.
While there is not full consensus on how to define the specifics of Open-Ended Evolution (OEE), at a high level it describes organisms that are continuously evolving and changing, rather than eventually reaching a state where nothing changes. The paper I am going to review today proposes a formal framework for discussing OEE. Surprisingly, the authors allude to undecidability and computational irreducibility, which reminds us of many other narratives we have discussed here. What's new under their lens? Is evolution a computational phenomenon?

Reproduction, growth, development, homeostasis, metabolism, adaptation, evolution... we could go on and on and never find a complete list of characteristics that define life. However, another question is how to represent those properties using mathematical tools. Today we review an article by Muñuzuri and Pérez-Mercader whose objective is precisely that—to capture the key properties of life using a set of equations.
We’re looking for strong Research Scientists and Research Engineers to help us push the frontier of autonomously discovering novel artifacts such as new knowledge, capabilities, or algorithms, in an open-ended self-improving loop.
