Hokkaido University | Postdoctoral Researcher Position on Informatics and Intelligent Robotics
Hokkaido University's Center for Human Nature, Artificial Intelligence, and Neuroscience (CHAIN) is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to investigate nonverbal communication channels between AI agents. The successful candidate will join a JST CREST project focused on human-AI collaboration. This is a full-time, non-tenure track position located in Sapporo, Japan.

The Center for Human Nature, Artificial Intelligence, and Neuroscience (CHAIN) at Hokkaido University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the JST CREST (Strategic Basic Research Program) research area “Symbiotic AI Interdisciplinary Systems: Creation of an Interdisciplinary System Foundation for a Symbiotic and Collaborative Society with Humans and AI.”
This position is part of the project “Establishing Nonverbal Communication Channels to Promote Human–AI Coexistence and Collaboration.” The project is conducted jointly with Professor Taro Maeda (Osaka University) and Professor Norihiko Saga (Kwansei Gakuin University). At CHAIN, Associate Professor Hiroyuki Iizuka leads the research theme “Constructing Nonverbal Communication Channels between AI–AI Agents.”
Informal inquiries regarding the research topics and directions are welcome. We are particularly interested in fellows with experience on the development of cognitive models for nonverbal communication channels between AI agents, as well as duties related to the research project.
Requirements
- Hold a doctoral degree by the date of appointment.
- Demonstrate an excellent research record in relevant fields.
- Have interest in the research conducted at CHAIN.
- Have experience in, or strong interest in, interdisciplinary collaborative research.
- Have experience in simulation research using deep learning.
- Be able to collaborate effectively with other research groups involved in the project.
Conditions
- Nontenured - Non-tenure track
- Period: April 1, 2026 – March 31, 2027
- The contract may be renewed annually, with the maximum term extending until March 31, 2031, subject to performance and funding availability.
- Probationary period present
- A one-month probationary period applies, with no changes in employment conditions.
- For applicants residing far from Hokkaido, interviews may be conducted online.
