Models of Consciousness 2026

Models of Consciousness 2026

Introduction

Dear friends and colleagues,

By the kind invitation of the Centre for the Philosophy of AI, Centre for Subjectivity Research, Department of Computer Science and the Department of Psychology at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, we, the Association for Mathematical Consciousness Science, and all of our organising and supporting institutions, are delighted to announce the seventh Models of Consciousness conference (MoC7) 2026.

Organised for the first time in Copenhagen, Denmark, the world’s most liveable city, the conference offers an exciting opportunity to make new research connections and enjoy the Hygge (cosy) Danish culture during October.

This year, the conference is dedicated to bringing together researchers on the following core themes:

  • Philosophical foundations
  • Methodologies and measurements
  • AI, LLMs, and consciousness science
  • Phenomenology and applied phenomenology

As in previous years, we will gather dedicated discussion sessions on open questions. Inspired by the historical achievements, the Copenhagen interpretation in physics, we will organise collaborative work to achieve a common understanding “towards a methodological and conceptual consensus”.

If successful, our project may result in the first collective paper of this magnitude in the field. Join us to make history as a community!

Additionally, the conference features a diverse programme of activities designed to maximise opportunities to advance the field, including invited talks, contributed talks and posters by application, together with the Mind-Matter Society Award 2026. We also have a colourful social programme including a welcome reception, excursions to the acclaimed Louisiana Museum and a conference dinner, among others.

We are delighted that MoC7 is hosted at the University of Copenhagen, North Campus, from October 12 to October 16, 2026, following six previous successful editions at the University of Oxford in 2019, online in 2021, at Stanford University in 2022, University of Oxford in 2023, University of Bamberg in 2024, and Hokkaido University in 2025.

We look forward to welcoming you to Copenhagen, Denmark, in October 2026!

Apply to give a talk or poster!

The conference hosts various opportunities for participants to present their research to the community. Applications require an abstract (250 words max) together with a short presentation application form, including keywords and the relevant theme of this year’s conference. (Participants are also welcome to attend without giving a talk or poster.)

  • Participant talks: Participants are invited to apply to present their research in a 20-minute talk slot (15 minutes for the talk plus 5 minutes for questions). Participant talks will be allocated in parallel sessions. Apply here before 16 June 2026.
  • Showcase talks: A small number of talk applications may be selected by the organising committee to be “showcase talks” and attract the offer of a 30-minute talk slot.
  • Poster session: Participants are invited to apply to present a poster at the poster session. Apply here before 16 June 2026.

Discussion sessions

Discussion sessions in small groups are integral to the Models of Consciousness conference tradition.

These sessions create the space to discuss open questions in the field. The sessions develop a shared sense of purpose and long-term goals among researchers working on the scientific study of consciousness.

This year, we will discuss key open questions that will contribute to methodological and conceptual consensus. The main questions will be suggested and voted on by all registered participants one month before the conference. The sessions may be recorded and summarised in the hope that they contribute to a collective paper, laying the groundwork for a methodological and conceptual understanding within consciousness science.

If successful, this ambitious project would be foundational and has never been done before in our field.

Join us in shaping the future of Consciousness Science!
